Linux User & Developer 57 - LUGRadio: the podcast phenom

Postby Hachi on Fri Dec 23, 2005 4:05 pm

The latest issue of Linux User & Developer magazine (57) has a cover feature article about LUGRadio on page 42, and also S3 Episode 3 on their cover disc.

Beware of the large picture of Jono!

The article is titled "The Birth of LUGRadio: an embodiment of the commons" and covers a whopping 6 pages. Definitely worth the read for fans and future fans of LUGRadio .

/me just went out and bought a copy of the mag - a reasonably interesting article by Mr O'Bacon :)

Of course, I'm just incredibly flattered that the magazine debut of LR is the one that I took part in :D

Your agent will be in touch with the large gents, I assume?

Has the magazine edited the content of the show at all?

Well Nightwish I'm not much of a reviewer, but here's a summary of what the article covered:

The article starts off by saying how LUGRadio got started and the events leading up to it, then goes on about the first episode and the setting up of mic's etc.

The next section describes how they went about solving their bandwidth requirements. Then how the audience developed after the first show was releases. How the community grew by setting up forums and an irc channel.

Then Jono goes on to talk about licenses, uncensored'ness, LUGRadio Live etc.

All in all a good read. Here's a few quotes:

"It was clear there was so much excitement and interest in the Open Source community; we wanted to bottle it in a radio show"

"Even a moderate amount of listeners would require some rather hefty bandwidth. The solution was simple - make the audience host the files"

"The Creative Commons project offered a superb opportunity to make the licensing of the show both clear and simple to understand for everyone involved"

Jono, are you able to get permission to post the article on the LUGRadio site, so foreigners can enjoy the article?

Doesn't seem to be, all the profanity and taboo is there.

The dvd cover clearly says next to a big exclamation mark, "Warning: the LUGRadio episode on this disc contains language which some readers may find offensive" :o

Only the mp3 format is format is on the disc though.

Thanks for the nice comments on the article folks. This article was a last minute request by Linux User & Developer, and I threw it together rather quickly. I think I hit most of the bases though.

I will see if they can provide the article for the community when the magazine has finished its print run.

I'm in two minds about LU&D. They have some really good articles, but they are much more hi-falutin' than LXF or Linux Magazine. A lot of their articles are very technical - the round headed Jon Masters writes quite a few on embedded stuff, which are good as long as he avoids putting "this author" everywhere which really winds me up for some reason. The do have some great opinion pieces though, with big FLOSS names like Eben Moglen, Pamela Jones and Jeremy Allison. But it's a very dry publication and some over the cover articles are of limited appeal.

I've been impressed with the latest issues of Linux Magazine though which seems to have improved drastically in the last couple of years. Linux Format also appears to be undergoing a personality change, with good interviews.

<pimpage>I summarised my feelings about PC magazines in a blog post recently.</pimpage>

Wouldn't that be a breech of the licence?
