LugRadio's licencing terms

Postby Aq on Thu Apr 14, 2005 8:14 am

First of all: this is me asking a question. Not the team, with whom I have not discussed this. So, licencing Nazis, don't get the idea that there's a change coming :-)

I've been looking at the BBC Creative Archive. They're about to start releasing stuff, and it might be useful to incorporate some of that into LugRadio at times -- snippets of sound, for example. However, I don't think (and correct me if I'm wrong here) that we'd be able to, because they have a Creative-Commons-ish Share-Alike clause, and we (although CC licenced) have the No-Derivatives clause. I know some people have been agitating for that to change for a while, and we've had good reasons to reject that request. However, if the Beeb can do it, perhaps we can too, especially since they have a "no derogatory uses" clause which might alleviate some of the concerns (so we could licence under the BBC Creative Licence).

Do you think that we should consider a change?

Interesting. I'll look more into the BBC licence, as I think it could be what we're looking for.

Only problem I can see is the licence's UK-only clause, which would affect our use of material from the BBC creative archive and would be pretty useless for our show.

I do like the non-derogatory wotsit, tho'.

I voted 'No change' above, because the "UK only" issue is bound to be a problem.

Mmmmm... I didn't notice the "UK only" clause... It annoys me. Does that mean that as a French citizen living in France I wouldn't be allowed to download / distribute BBC^H^H^HLugRadio shows? Oh noooooo !!!

That's an issue. And by the way, that's an issue for the BBC content. I think it could be an interesting topic for the next episode. "BBC archives: No DRM, but only in the UK."

If there is a UK clause, then we cannot include bits from the creative archive anyway.

As for a license change, my personal view is that I am happy with what we have now. I am however open to discussion. :)

I think the only in the UK restriction was going to be a necessity due to the difficulty in securing rights worldwide compared to only the UK. Then there's the issue that users worldwide would be profiting from the UK's high TV licence without paying a thing back into it.

but you think only people in the UK can access Auntie's website?

I dont understand licensing. I know its important but its incredibly goddam boring so you guys just do what you think is right to further and improve the show and I'll be right behind you.

snecklifter, I totally agree. I don't really get it either, as long as it's good for the show I don't mind.

nikopol, my household doesn't pay the TV license because we don't have a TV (Just a lot of computers!!). So I get all the rest of the services from the BBC for free, sorry fer stealing your money! :P (Radio/Website etc) Grr, we get a letter from the TV Licensing people every year, but that's another story.

Alternatively, why vote on a thread that's over two years old?

Pretty pointless considering the licence changed on the most recent episode anyway.

Because most of the episodes are still under the old licence. For the near future, anyway.

I know the licence has been changed already, but i voted 'no change', because what i really meant was 'it doesn't make a difference to me', since you're highly unlikely to sue me if i decide to do whatever with your shows :)

In case you're reading this, I think the thread got re-opened by a spammer, which I have now deleted.
