Promoting my Creative Commons stuff

Postby jono on Wed Jun 21, 2006 10:03 am

Hi all,

I want to seek your advice about something.

As some of you will know, I run http://www.recreantview.org and it is where I release my music. I have recently changed my license for the music to allow derivative works, so people can do remixes, mashups and whatnot.

Well, I fairly new to the whole creative commons culture, and I want to promote the site and the freedom that it gives people. I have spent quite some time pushing Open Source and now I want to explore pushing Creative Commons. I like the idea of people doing mashups, writing guitar tab, and I am happy to release custom versions of the songs (such as I did with my new tune Eslaved By Pain - I uploaded a version with just drums and bass so people can fiddle with it).

So, where do I promote this kind of content? How do I (a) get more people to recreantview.org and (b) encourage more people to use Creative Commons licenses?

Get your songs on one of the listed sites on Creative Commons - I've recently been listening to some of the music on Jamendo.com, so it might be worth getting on there.

Actually, you'd stand a reasonable chance of getting directly pimped on the CC blog: "The Internet's Jono Bacon releasees all his music under permissive CC licences!"

There are sites (http://music.podshow.com and http://www.podsafeaudio.com are the first I found on Google) that exist to promote creative commons music for use in mashups or to play on podcasts. It might be worth checking out.
