I wanted to call a new server for one of our customers scalpel (they're a medical optics company), but out of 5 people none of us could actually spell it right 75% of the time.

In other words - KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid)

Or alias it down in your /etc/hosts file.

In which case you might as well just give it a short name!

I have a desktop, dual booted with Windows XP and gentoo - the windows is "smith" and gentoo is "neo". My always-on server (also gentoo) is morpheus. My old, messing-about-with computer, currently on Windows 2K is "trinity"

No marks for guessing where they're from.

BTW,
I'm thinking of getting a new laptop - if I did what would it be? I was thinking of either "oracle" or "ghost"

New naming scheme

Postby CanadianLinuxNerd on Mon Nov 07, 2005 11:34 pm

Laptop is Matt ('cause he's small)
Router is Ade ('cause he's a network geek)
Desktop is Jono (cause I do publishing stuff on it)
Wifes machine is Aq (just keeping with the theme)
Test machine is Sparks (mostly just cause it gives off sparks)

I need a better naming scheme, but here goes:

erebus (gateway,fileserver,asterisk,web.mail...the whore box)
eternity (mythtv box)
chilli (desktop)
pepper (laptop)
prick (server in another country)
ringring (ip phone)
ap (wifi ap)
dreambox (dreambox)
sipura (voip ata)
us (box in the US)

my naming scheme changes with every box i add :(

The reason you should never let customers name their own servers: 'trevor', the name our latest customer wants to call the server :( Never again shall I give a user a choice...ever ;)

Oh good. Star Wars and Matrix naming conventions.

I'm way ahead of the curve here - Serenity naming convention!

Server: Lenore (the fembot)
Laptop: Book (obviously)

A company I used to work for uses Bond as a convention:

All desktops: Bond Girls
All servers: Bond villians and henchmen
All laptops: Vehicles
Cisco switches: Film titles

It was cute to start with, but to be honest I think it's going to seriously effect their expansion plans. They're out of film titles already, and they've only got about 5 more desktops to get before they're maxed out.

follow up to my previous post

Looks like I will be adding a new box to the network shortly, as a friend of mine has aquired a new machine and his wife is making him get rid of the old one (grounds for divorce if you ask me). This presents a bit of a problem as I am all out of regular presenters to name boxes after. I figure I will probably name it after one of the past guest presenters but can't decide between Adam and Mrben. Imput from the Lugradio comunity would be appreciated, what do you guys think?

Who? Whaat? When? Which Episode of FireFly, or is it in the Film? Or do you mean Inara (the "companion"?)
