The new Nokia N810 (S5E3)
In Season 5 episode 3, we discussed the new Nokia N810 with Quim Gil of Nokia. Are you going to buy one? Does the device seem like a good idea at all?

while the device seems interesting the asus eee laptop is cheaper and does the same thing on a better supported platform (and AFIAK you can use ubuntu on it)

Apart from it doesn't have bluetooth, built-in GPS, built-in FM radio, built-in FM transmitter or a touch screen....

Different purposes, though. The Eee is a laptop -- a small one, granted, but still something you'd need to carry around in a bag. The N810 is a pocket-sized device (big pocket, granted), designed to be carried around all the time. They're approaching the same goals from two different ends. There's nothing I can do on an N810 or an Eee that I can't theoretically also do on my Nokia E50 phone, but that doesn't mean that the two things are substitutes.

Aq,
how well does the nokia E50 work with linux? I'm going to be replacing my dreadful nokia 6600 soon and it's just a question of whether I get a normal smartphone or wait for the production release of the neo1973 (openmoko).

Depends on what you want to do. If you plug it in via the USB cable then it acts as a USB mass storage device, like a USB keyring, with a tiny tweak it appears in Rhythmbox/Banshee as a music device when it is so plugged in, and I can connect to the phone with Bluetooth. What else does it need to do?

calendar/contacts synching with opensync..
the first lot of series60 phones like the nokia 6600 are horribly broken in this regard. The later ones are supposed to be much better but I wondered if you had actually tried it.

Ah. I don;t know about that; I sync my phone to google calendar via scheduleworld, I'm afraid.

Re: The new Nokia N810 (S5E3)
I have the first of the tablets, the 770. It's quite useful and I found surprising uses for it, it's pretty good for reading books for example. It has a lot of problems though. The software is buggy and slow, and it can't really be updated because everything important is closed and proprietary, and worst of all, Nokia discontinued all software support by surprise and broke API compatibility with the next versions. I don't know if Nokia still practices the policy of surprise discontinuation, but I wouldn't buy anything from them until they have proved that they don't abandon the devices too soon.
The EEE Pc actually does kind of the same thing as the tablet. I'm thinking of replacing the 770 with one. The tablets are a bit too big to fit in a (trouser) pocket, so I have to carry mine in a bag anyway. Both the EEE and the tablets are useless for most real work because of the small screen. The EEE's advantage is the standard hardware, so you don't have to rely on the manufacturer for software support.

I'll be buying one of these as soon as humanly possible. I've been waiting for the built in GPS for awhile now and the keyboard is a straight up bonus. Good work Nokia!
I'll also be buying the (pink) Asus EEE for my girlfriend. It should be perfect for her grad school adventures, and according to her small things are cute (*shrug*).

I have one, they are pretty cool. Some software is a bit buggy but the amount of functionality it has is amazing.
