I think you've hit the nail on the head. Knowing your team mates and opponents 'personally' increasing the enjoyment of playing hugely.

I remember when we first started, none of us were that good, but I felt reasonably confident of not embarrassing myself. Last time I played, with the exception of nlindblad and fuzzix, I didn't know anyone playing...

Hopefully everyone can have some sort of inclusive mindset the next time they play, since players are the lifeblood of any game, and new ones are always good to mix things up a bit.

Perhaps we need to nominate one of the two nights as a n00b night, where players who either aren't confident of their skills or have just started playing can play with some specific rules in place, i.e. no sniping, spawnkilling, camping, heavy weapons, etc. The other night could just be a free-for-all :)

Maybe it just needs some fresh maps or a different rotation to reinvigorate interest? Maybe it needs a whole new game. How do people feel about Tremulous, Nexiuz, or Sauerbraten?

I don't really like straight 3d deathmatch games, so Nexiuz and Sauerbraten don't really appeal. Tremulous, however, I think is excellent, and we've played a little bit on the temporary server I set up.

I hate to be the one to say this, but I think you actually need to promote this game (and this server) if you want lots of people to play it. I'm sure the amount of people has some effect on the enjoyability of play. Now, if only you had some kind of radio show you could mention it on.. hmm.

I've never played either ET or Tremulous, but I was thinking about giving it ago until I heard about the possible end of the lugradio gaming servers. However, I'd definately be up for playing a few matches if a noob is welcome and the servers are still around.

It does get pimped on the show every so often, usually at the end. It's in the topic of the IRC channel and there's documentation on the wiki. Short of putting it in large, friendly letters at the top of the main site (which strikes me as overkill for an informal LAN game) I'm not sure how much more it could be promoted. And I write this as a non-player. :) Of course, I'm sure suggestions are welcome.

I've been playing ET religiously, untill a few weeks ago I missed 2-3 games, and kinda forgot about it, but now I'm back. I agree it's a lot more fun if more people turn up. Also, all these random new people who nobody's ever heard of kinda spoil the game.

Also, maybe the game should be moved to different nights. For me, anyway, wednesday and sunday are pretty much the worst - Wednesday is right in the middle of the week, when I usually have a lot going on, and Sunday is usually when I'm frantically trying to finish homework for monday, :). Perhaps Friday/saturday?

I really love ET, it's got all the good elements of FPSs, but tactics are really important too. It's free, supports windows and linux. I'd hate to see the lugradio server go, all the pubs and clan servers I've been on suck - people are abusive, or just stupid (i.e. resetting the match 3 seconds before the opposing team wins)

Considering the number of bodies on IRC on the weekend evenings, I suspect Sunday is actually the best -- other nights people go out, drink, have social lives, etc (most of us aren't students) but stay in Sunday as Mondays are bad enough without a hangover to help it along....

The jolt servers are usually empty (they definitely were on Sunday night), and to be honest I don't see the point in my running a dedicated server for hardly any use being made of it. By all means, keep the LR gaming clan going, but right now there's just not enough demand for a well-networked server IMO.

Prove me wrong, by all means - I'll check the logs from the next four nights when I get back from holiday.
